Is Your To Do List Keeping You From Getting the Right Things Done?

July 7th, 2010

Not long ago, I heard something that just broke my heart.

I had done a mini-survey on the results people are getting from their online marketing. And in response to a question about how often she was creating regular connection with her audience, I received this comment:

“I don’t have time to write a newsletter and write ebooks to give away. Wish I did! If I had more time, I would get better results for sure.”

The reason it broke my heart is because, reading between the lines, I know that this is someone who has a lot to give. And from the sound of it, she’s scrambling in a business structure that saps all her time and energy just taking care of the “day to day.” So her ability to share her gifts is seriously diluted.

And I know she’s not alone.

Wellness professionals, coaches, consultants, and the like are typically passionate about what they do. They’ve got a strong desire to make a contribution and transform lives – and they’re continually looking for ways to enhance their skills and serve more.

Problem is, in their efforts to be of service, they take on too much and can lose perspective of the bigger picture (attracting clients and creating cash flow) in favor of “getting stuff done” – and end up missing the proverbial forest for the trees, not to mention buried under a mile-long To Do list.

The way to serve more is by having a system in place that allows you time to take action on new learning and create on-going relationship with your audience. That way the connection is there when you most need it – when you want them to buy.

Because it’s only when they say ‘yes’ to your offers that they get the results they want (transformation), and you get the results you want (income). Oh, happy day!

To assist in creating a comfortable system that allows you the time to truly be of service AND get better results, here are my 3 favorite tips:

1) Designate one day a week for business-building activities

I’m talking Client-Free time! Since I started doing this two years ago (I actually devote two days a week), the results have been amazing. My fear that my client base would drop if I limited my availability was totally unfounded. Use the time for marketing, writing, creative day-dreaming, whatever will best give you the momentum to “recharge your batteries” and expand your connection to your audience as a whole.

2) Stop trying to do it all alone

No business can become truly successful as a one-person operation. You have certain gifts, talents and strengths that are important to your business growth. Your main focus should be delivering your services and marketing your services. Everything else –bookkeeping, web maintenance, setting appointments, posting articles, etc.- is sapping your energy and should be outsourced. (It will actually cost less overall to delegate than to do it yourself!)

3) Draw on the wisdom and support of like-minded mentors and colleagues

Continued learning and masterminding is vital to keeping your energy, creativity and momentum high. The outside feedback provides much needed accountability and helps you stay focused on the right things so you get more done. I know from personal experience how valuable it is to always be working with a mentor, sharing ideas with colleagues and surrounding yourself with other motivated, successful people who can actively support your own progress. (And give you the loving kick in the pants when you need it!)

Your Ideas Only Pay Off When You Put Them Into Action

Your ability to create transformation and impact the lives of your clients is seriously hampered when you’re overwhelmed by an overflowing To Do list. Seeking out new learning experiences is a wonderful way to bring a fresh ideas and creativity into your business. BUT, take care not to let the learning get in the way of taking action.

You’ll be able to help more people when you have a system for taking action quickly, easily and consistently.
